Background

Time on the islands of the Caribbean was often hard to gauge unless one lived in the cities and experienced the ebb and flow of the ultra modern world. Outside of that, life was the seasons and the days. You got up, you did your jobs, got what you needed and enjoyed your life the best you could. Its how Odell grew up, living with his mama. Apparently his dad had gotten drunk and fallen off a boat never to be seen again, or at least that’s what the other fishermen had said. Still, it was a job you could do without much training, and he seemed to have a knack for it, always catching bigger fish than the others even with only a hook and line.

Course, every child grows up, and went from working on the docks chucking his line in to joining the rest of the men out on the fishing boats, in search of the daily food to keep them fed, and to make some money for the town. He enjoyed the days, hanging out with the other fishermen, out on the water under the sun. But fate has other things in store for the children of the gods, whether they know their parentage or not. You can go out to sea a hundred times, and no matters your experience she will always surprise you. A storm came out of no where, no body could have reacted to it in time. But a storm that size took the little fishing boat like it was a minnow in a wave, and just crashed it apart.

He woke up perhaps hours, perhaps days later, his body slumped over a piece of wooden wreckage from the ship, bleeding slightly still from a fish hook embedded in his ear. The sun was beating down on him, and he was groggy, but he finally noticed a little dinghy floating nearby with an old black man sitting there watching him with a smile on his face, and a fishing line down in the water. “Ya want some help? Or you enjoying your swim there son?” He said with a smile as the boat moved towards the floating wreckage without any movement from the old man.

Odell reached for the boat when it came near, pulling himself up carefully so as not to disrupt the boat, though it seemed to be as sturdy as dry land. “Its good luck you were out here. Don’t know if I coulda made it to land without ya.” The old man just nodded as he handed Odell a straw hat to keep the sun from his eyes. “Well my boy, its a good thing I am here then.” He smiled an old broken toothed smile. “Lets get moved away from this wreckage then and back to shore.”

As they moved away, all was revealed to the younger man, telling him about life, his parentage and the way of things. It probably would have been more traumatic, but blood loss and dehydration tend to make things make a lot more sense to you, or at least prevent you from freaking out so much. Course the boat ride took longer than he expected, and the waters weren’t quite what he expected. When he realized where he was though, it was in another country entirely, far colder, and far less pleasant.

Agwe explain to him that this was New Atlantis, and that everything in the boat was his. It was then that he just smiled and walked off the boat into the water and disapeared. Leaving one very confused young scion to deal with matters he had no clue about.
