Background
I was never a happy child. Lets put it like that.
Without a father, I always felt that I should protect my mother. We were in a pretty rough part of the Bronx, and life wasn't always easy. My mom was a first generation greek immigrant to the US, she never really spoke all that much about the home country, because, well, she was here to build a new life. She also never really spoke much about my father. But she did used to grow angry when I cursed him out for abandoning us.
Why that upset her so much makes a lot more sense to me now.
Back then, though, it was just one more injustice. The world was full of them. My mother tried so hard to eke out an existence amongst the squallor, but she never got anywhere with it. The easy path to riches- drugs, violence, prostitution- it was all around us, and we never faltered in our opposition of it, but, things -never- got easier.
I'd already decided at a young age that there was only one path for me to go, to try and beat back against this madness. I was pretty good at school, but it was in sports that I'd truly excelled, and if nobody else was going to bring back some kind of decency to the neighbourhood, then I was going to do it myself.
I enrolled in the police academy, and again, I excelled. It wasn't precisely difficult work. I had a gift for it, and in just a few years, I was doing my part to bring justice back to the streets. Of course. It wasn't like this was going to be -easy-, and I knew that. What I didn't expect was the kind of corruption I found in the ranks.
Obviously, I had no interest in it. Unfortunately, some weren't just going to let that stand. I was a big guy, but, there were a lot more of them than there were of me. I refused to back down, and I was beaten badly for it. It wasn't long after this that I was transferred out of the department. Ostensiably for all my good work. I knew better.
For a year or so I worked as a riot officer. I like to think I did a little good, even if I was moving out of the neighbourhood I'd always wanted to work in. I couldn't be prepared for the way things went.
It was one night, I was called up to a meeting with the head of the department. I wasn't told what it was I was meant to be discussing, but, when I got there, it wasn't him I was talking to. It was the Chief of Police himself. He put his hand on my shoulder, and explained that it was time I started work fighting against a different breed of corruption.
I can't really describe what happened that night. Obviously, I learned a lot more about the world than I could have ever anticipated being real. My blood was awakened, and the sheer power which coursed through my veins… well, it was intoxicating. If it wasn't for that power, I could never have believed that my father was really… Zeus. Who could? It sounds like madness, even now.
For a while, I returned to Greece. Learning a little about my heritage, where I had come from, what it was that was expected of me now. The Titanspawn were clearly a terrifying breed of menace, poised to snuff out civilization and everything that mankind had ever worked for. If there had ever been a better force for me to fight, I don't think I have seen it.
Zeus granted me some tools to assist with my task. Imbuing my armor with the protective qualities of his own robes, and granting me a weapon that could best make use of my enhanced bloodline. I met my… half-brother, I suppose. Ares. We talked for a time, and he gave me another gift. A shield to match my armor, to grant me some of his protection through these dark times.
And then I returned to New York. My blood ignited and ready for battle. Determined to stand firm, and protect my city against the threats that assail it.
Personality
Fiercely dedicated to fighting against evil and injustice with every scrap of his being. There's not much about him which could be described as light-hearted or easy going, he has few hobbies, and fewer friends, seeing life as a very serious duty from which there is no escape.
If there are a few qualities which define him, however, they are his steadfast dependability, his unwavering resolve, and his strength. Not just in physical terms- though this is obviously something of a defining quality in the way he sees himself- but also in mental terms. He is resolute and steadfast, a mental rock that refuses to waver. When he has set his mind to a task, he will do his level best to see it through.
