Background
Neil Elliott's parents divorced when he was four years old, with his father cutting all ties with them. Neil's mom, Diane Elliott (taking back her maiden name), always told him that it was not his fault his father left. Which was mostly true: Neil didn't do anything specific. He just happened to exist.
Years before, Neil's mother was driving home from work in a massive snowstorm, even though her job had let its employees out early. Her car slid all over the road, and almost crashed into the front of a small office building. Well after closing time, the only person around was a slightly older man who served as the security guard for the building. Diane never knew his full name, just what it said on his name tag: 'H. Dahl.' Diane called her husband to let her know she was stuck, and that she was in a safe place and would try and get out when the snow tapered off. One thing led to another…
Neil's fair hair was from his mother, but his bright blue eyes were a tipoff; both Diane's family and Conrad Miller's (her husband) family had brown eyes to a man. Conrad suspected, but never asked until the thoughts of unfaithfulness and work pressures coupled with a child broke him. He got a DNA test, and found he wasn't the birth father. Diane confessed, and Conrad left.
Neil, of course, has no idea of any of that. But his grandparents always looked at him askance, and he always felt a little out of the loop. His mother relocated to a smaller apartment in New York, a new job, and worked on raising Neil herself. (Diane did investigate; the office building she was holed up in during the snowstorm had never heard of an 'H. Dahl.')
Neil saw how much pressure his mother was under, so ended up being a bit more grown-up than other kids his age; doing more than his fair share of chores and work. Seeing this isolated Neil from other kids who had time to go out and have a bit of fun, Neil's Christmas when he was ten was a single gift: A Golden Retreiver Puppy which Neil promptly named Sunrise. Neil, being who he was, always took care of Sunrise, and the dog became his best friend, in a way.
As Neil got older, he didn't quite rebel as most teenagers would. After all, every teenager rebelled, so he rebelled in the other direction. All he saw was how others were treated, and how no one helped. After all, his mom didn't get much help when his father left. He would do it differently; he'd set the example. So, during high school, Neil ended up in detention quite a bit for fighting. Not for bullying or picking fights; any time he saw somone getting picked on, Neil stepped in whether his help was asked for or not. This involved getting beat up a lot at first, but he eventually learned to hold his own. Still, who knew what to say to him; Neil would help someone in trouble, and move on. Especially after the first few times the people he tried to help weren't that grateful.
In Neil's senior year, there's added pressure of what to do after high school, and doing his usual 'saving.' There's been rumors, stories, and tales of strange things in New York. Tales of Myth and Old Gods. Neil's first thought was 'if it was true, and these gods are real, who's going to protect the regular folks?' He's been getting headaches lately; he swears he's hearing something at the edge of his senses, and that things don't feel quite right.
Eventually, he's going to find out the answer is 'himself.' And his loyal Sunrise, of course.
Personality
Neil tries to be what he perceives as a 'hero,' in his own way. He tries to help others without any thought of reward or payment, he's loyal to a fault, and honest. If he had time after school, he probably would have joined the Boy Scouts. He will throw himself into a situation where he sees someone needs help, without much of a thought for either his own safety, or whether the person wants help or not. He's not stupid; he knows how people react to him, but he does what he does, because he wants to set an example for others, and himself. He could use some time to let his hair down, as it were.
Relationships
The D-List:
Dion: I owe him way too much, especially for this second chance. I apologized, but I will always feel like I have to make it up to him for vanishing as I did before.
Jocelyn: One of the first Scions I met when I came back to town. She's smart, cool, and nice. She's someone I can ask about some of the finer points of things like Fate. Just…not Aillen. She's not fond of Alexis, and I wonder if I should intervene.
Hopper: I should talk to him more, I think. He's…Hopper, and I am not sure I really understand what that really entails.
Sophia: Girl with the birds. She's the daughter of a goddess I don't even know about, from a pantheon I haven't heard of. I should look it up on Wikipedia or something. It's the respectable thing to do.
Aillen: Likes dogs, strong, warrior type. Jocelyn was right when she said we'd get along. He's taught me a lot. He's also pathologically blind to Jocelyn's feelings for him. I don't get it.
Naomi: Young daughter of Tsuki-Yomi. Very expressive, seems to know what she wants and what to do to achieve it. I can respect that.
Alexis: Wow. Just… I never thought about having a girlfriend, and *bam* it just happened. I'm a bit of a doof when it comes to this stuff, but Alexis is very patient. And pretty, and strong. I know in Norse myths that romances with Valkyries never end well, but she's worth Hel.
Events Thus Far
School Daze RP Date: 11/8/09, IC Date: 11/9/09; Neil's first scene. Confronting someone based off some serious misinformation, coupled with bizarre happenings Neil doesn't even understand. Leaves him with a nasty headache.
