Background

Kamala's arrival into the Jadeja family was a moment of quiet, fervent celebration. She was not their child by birth, but that of her new father's cousin who had most grievously died in a crash with his wife; however, since she was practically immediate family anyway, they soon thought of her as their own. As she was part of the Kshatriya caste, little Kamala's life was laid out for her before birth: she would be gentle and docile, absolutely obedient to her father's wishes and happy to be married off to the man her parents chose for her. Such was the duties of a dutiful girl, of course. Talent and wit was of lesser importance; lesser enough that it didn't bear mentioning, really. Their family values were stern, and a beautiful, obedient child would count for more than an intelligent one.

Unfortunately for them, Kamala inherited a healthy measure of intelligence along with her beauty. She was quick of mind as well as form, and constantly plagued her mother's soul out with questions about the nature of things. When she was quite young, her parents still indulged it to some degree, but as she became older, they discovered that moderation was not one of her virtues. She preferred laying flat on her back on the roof of the house to learning about how to run that house, and were it not that dancing was close to the kalarippayattu that she loved, she would never have set foot in a dancing studio. She was as willful as an unbroken horse, as willful as a /boy/, and that would never do.

They tried everything to make her conform: punishments, extra chores, the odd beatings and so on. She was frequently sent to her room in the evenings without food, and instead of learning her lesson of filial piety and ordered harmony. It was almost the fight of the century when they tried to engage her to someone at age sixteen. Kamala didn't come out of her room for days, and spent so much time on the computer in her room that they had a tremendous telephone bill that month, another pain to add to her father's headaches. Oh, it made them proud that she graduated from her school with top honours, but it didn't solve the problem: what were they going to /do/ with such a spoiled, ungrateful child?

The answer came in the form of a scholarship application - one that Kamala had put in at a New York university. She had been accepted into their astronomical program, and her parents, who loved her even though she made them turn grey prematurely, finally gave in with as good a grace as they could when distant family from that side of the world called, saying that they would /of course/ take in the young girl, watch over her and keep her safe!

Kamala duly packed her bags, grinned in anticipation and set off on the long journey to New York. She settled in happily and worked hard for the next year, before finally meeting her divine parents in a quiet, out-of-the-way lecture room one day just after her 21st birthday. Vishnu had to go almost immediately, but Lakshmi stayed for a little while longer and gently explained a few things to her, from her own nature, to the task that lay ahead of her, to the fact that yes, they loved her, as did her adoptive parents, and that sometime, true wealth was to be found in kids, although that love sometimes had different expressions.

Now she goes through life as a student, keeping her eyes out for Asuras and other Titan-spawn, inbetween trying to maintain her grades and still have something of a social life. She understands her adoptive family a little better, though she still doesn't agree with them. Being nagged by her mother (both of them!) to get a nice young boy and settle down is driving her around the bend currently. Although she inherited her mother's beauty, she doesn't want to chance having inherited her fidelity as well - no settling down for her for the moment!
