Twenty-eight years, three months, and twelve days ago, give or take a few hours, my father met the woman whom he swore he would never, could never, and should never be without.

Twenty-seven years, five months, twelve days ago, give or take a few hours, I was born.

Twenty-six years, four months, twenty days ago, give or take a few hours, my mother vanished without a trace.

Twenty-five years, two months, six days ago, give or take a few hours, my dad started dating again because the police found what they thought to be my mother's body inside of a burned out car in a gully alongside a mountain road in North Carolina.

My dad had the best of intentions, but the best of intentions are nothing before the hands of a cruel and fickle mistress like Fate… Or the needs of a goddess who has been awarded the barest glance at the future and knows only that she needs a son, a Scion, with a keen mind and all of her persuasive abilities to persevere in the face of overwhelming odds, injustice, and the true and terrible nature of Man and God alike.

She needed me.

I am Norman Riddick Gibbs, named in the fashion popular in my mother's "native" Caribbean. She never really explained to my father just where in the Caribbean she was from, just that the Caribbean is where she was raised. My father, Nathan Jermaine Gibbs, met my mother, purportedly Ladyblossom Marie Duvalier, in Raleigh, North Carolina way back in February of 1981. Miss Duvalier, a native of the Caribbean, led my father on a whirlwind courtship that took less than two months. They were married by April 15th and living happily in North Carolina.

I was conceived on their wedding night and born just under exactly nine months later. My mother nearly died during delivery, but was saved by a medical miracle. About a year and a month later, she just disappeared. She was at work and, quite inexplicably, never returned from a trip to the women's room. Her car never left the parking lot. Her purse was still at her desk. My father's life was turned upside down and I was too little to know anything about it.

A year and a sixth later, the cops found what they thought to be my mother's body, mutilated and mangled by a freak winter car wreck that was covered up by meteorological means. My father took it badly and started dating again, trying to find a mother for his son to grow up with. He never found one, instead I grew up surrounded by gold-diggers, prostitutes, hussies, skanks, and an endless plethora of losers amongst the female species that seemed to be the only ones interested in my poor father.

I grew up as damaged goods, abused and embittered by these women who thought they could be the mother to put me out of my misery. I grew up pretty damn well in spite of them. In spite of them, I'm not a womanizer. I'm not a pimp. I'm a special agent for one of this country's finest law enforcement and intelligence gathering organizations. I'm also my mother's son.

You see, my mom? She wasn't Ladyblossom Marie Duvalier, not really. My mom was Erzulie, the Loa of Love, of Passion, of That Which Drives The World. She was a defender of women and children, a lover to men and women of all stripes, and a pillar of the community. I will never know what it was that drove her to spawn me, to forge a male Scion in the fires of terrible things, and to lead me to my natural calling as a special agent and, more importantly, a spy.

I was one of the youngest in my training class. I graduated amongst the top of the class. I have done everything there is to be done and seen more things than the American government can ever allow the average citizen to know. At the end of the day though, just as when I was a child, I come home to a meal cooked by a follower of my mother. She is not my serviteur, nor my guide, nor anything to me. She is a servant of my mother at the metaphysical and the housekeeper for my townhouse on the Upper West Side. It may be happy coincidence, but I don't believe in coincidence. Coincidences are an opiate of the masses, they keep people from fearing logical outcomes and consequences of their actions.

I will find out who is contriving the coincidences that pervade this city, that terrorize my fellow Scions, and that are destroying the mortals under my protection. And when I do?

I'll kill you.

Personality

Serious, nearly to a fault, and often the straight-man to many a joke, Special Agent N.R. Gibbs is not without a sense of humor. More often than not though, Gibbs laughs at dry wit and wryly amusing circumstances rather than what most others would consider to be abject hilarity.

Definitely a child of his mother, Norman is a man of two faces. On the one side, he is a gentleman's gentleman, all refinement and a seducer of women without over-stepping the bounds of civil society. By contrast, his other side is the warrior's warrior, cunning and dangerous, empowered by righteousness and an intrinsic need to right wrongs, solve mysteries, and maintain the innocence of the world.

While his mother, Erzulie, may at times be the protector of women and children, Norman is a protector of children. Women can be just as dangerous, just as horrible, as any male so far as Gibbs is concerned. His job, his mission on this Earth, is to make the world a better place for the future. Sometimes this means that he must solve the mysteries and the transgressions of the past, sometimes this means that he must protect the next generation, and sometimes this means he must do… Things… in the name of the greater good.

3-Dot Relic	History: Another fine Erika Smith invention, the Shapeshifter's ID is a polymorphic ID card that changes its appearance to suit Gibbs' various changes in appearance. Using a mixture of technologies, it can scan and memorize a number of different forms of identification before replicating their appearance. Further technological marvels allow the ID to fill in data fields either beforehand or on the fly by voice command and biometric analysis of Gibbs' latest disguise.

History: Somehow Erzulie came into possession of a KA-BAR knife specially designed for a classified military operation with a strange background. Equipped with a garrote wire hidden in the pommel of the knife, divine ichor was somehow incorporated into the forging process and resulted in a knife uniquely made for its given purpose - killing others without detection. Erzulie has passed this subtlest of knives along to her son upon his Second Visitation.

3-Dot Relic	History: A pair of soft, supple leather gloves said to have belonged to one of the best assassins of the Renaissance, they have had a long history of being worn by assassins and spies the world over for centuries. Acquired from one of her many lovers, Erzulie has gifted these gloves to Gibbs to assist him in his travels.

2-Dot Relic	History: A concealable leather double-holster designed for utility purposes. It is designed to holster two large pistols and a few other tools of the trade comfortably. Divine hands got a hold of it though and infused the leather with the essence of the moon by cleansing and purifying it with lunar dust and samples of ejected lunar material that survived re-entry into Earth's atmosphere.

History: Built from the scraps of one of the first thousand M16s ever fielded by the U.S. military, this divine weapon has been a long time in the development. Cleansing the components and improving the design as gradually as the M16 itself has evolved, ensuring the most useful weapon possible. Erzulie called in some sort of favor in order to get the rifle and pass it on to Norman as a gift for his second Visitation.

1-Dot Relic	History: A pair of enchanted sunglasses made of a type of safety glass common amongst glasses for shooting ranges. Erzulie claims to have been given them by someone else to give to Gibbs, though she has not been forthcoming on who. Unisex, stylish, and designed to obscure their mundane purpose, the evidence against a third party passing them along through Erzulie is non-existent. What exactly channels the power of the purview is unclear to Gibbs, though there's clearly something about them.

History: A gift from Erzulie to Norman, it is thoroughly unclear who she got the gun from. For the past two years, however, it has been constantly in his possession as his non-departmental back-up weapon.

1-Dot Relic	History: A trio of small stars tattooed on Gibbs' right forearm. The last tattoo, so far as Gibbs is aware, of his that has been endowed with mystical power. Gifted to him by the same agent of Erzulie as the other tattoos, this trio of stars grant him access to the Darkness purview, allowing him to conceal his activities.
