Background

The Black Knight; a knight without fealty to a lord. Often a mercenary, but sometimes also a knight who conceals his identity and desires no recognition. How, then, does modern man become such an Arthurian archetype?

Bran Morrigna has Irish roots, but only on his mother's side. His father was an American folklore enthusiast and teacher who fell for one of his collegues at University. A very striking woman much acknowledgeable in his interests, he quickly found his interests turning into an obsession towards Irish myth under her guidance. When she was pregnant, Bran's father was already half-living in a dreamworld of his own amongst the sidhe and firbolg stories. Just as the Morrigan had intended, for it was she who had stolen his heart. Her gift of Prophecy had revealed unto her that a son born of their union would become a powerful warrior for their cause, if properly guided. And so she manipulated the man until he was gone far enough to actually raise Bran according to the old ideals of the Tuatha de Danaan, imparting stories upon stories on him that would unknowingly prepare him for his future.

And, guided by his blood, Bran truly delighted in learning of these things. Usually withdrawn but raised to keep strong ideals he spent just enough effort on his education to be able to get by without trouble, prefering to engage in physical training as much as possible. The idea of wielding a sword appealed to him and he seemed to be a natural; without any real instruction he somehow taught himself proper swordplay with nothing but a stick.

As he grew older he became known for being a strange young man, with his fierce appearance and surprising strength. Especially as he would stand up against those who bullied others in their behalf and take to helping people in need as he could, without ever asking for even a small 'thank you'.

When one day he was accidentally hurt in a fencing competition, run through the stomach with a blade, he suddenly found himself on a battlefield amongst thousands of corpses. An old woman with two ravens sitting on her shoulders waited for him, there. Bran recognized her almost immediately, and when he finally learned the truth he was not in the least hesistant to call her mother. He swore to her that he would master and impart his skills to others so that the old ways would never die and tend to the battlefields that were her domain. He also received a present befitting of the destiny the Morrigan believed to be his: the sword Caliburn, supposedly the legendary weapon that was wielded by Arthur Pendragon himself. The truth of that is unclear, but it was powerful nevertheless. When he awoke in a hospital, he had the sword in his hands and was unhurt.

Thus clear of his purpose, Bran followed the advice of his mother and made way from cold Alaska towards New York, where his destiny lies. It proved a long journey as he chanced upon quite a few battles and enemies upon the way — but now he had finally arrived.

Personality

Bran is well-aware that his manner is strange in comparison to most people; he figures that the Morrigan somehow influenced his father to raise him as he did, putting him under some spell or geas. He likes the way he is, though, and does not blame her. Indeed, Bran usually does not pretend to normalcy without good reason and thus may sometimes end up as a curiosity despite his no-nonsense attitude.

Despite his cold exterior he does care about people and feels a strong need to use his powers to protect them; it is easy to incite his anger by threatening innocents and not too uncommon for him to roar in rage upon seeing such cowardly behaviour. He is usually not very quick to actually make friends despite his caring attitude, a trait he no doubt inherited from his mother.

Relationships

So far, he honours both his father and mother. What an exciting list of relationships!

Events Thus Far

Bran decided to celebrate his arrival by hanging out and relaxing at the beach. Ironically, just as he did so, four other scions (Dee, Kailin, Melanope and Tychon) also turned up there and he became witness to a first meeting between two reborn Atlanteans right next to him without realizing it. One of them (Melanope) even flirted with him, but unused to such attention he decided to make a hasty retreat rather than embarass himself.

Note: These are not known to the public, obviously. They're not easy to figure out casually, either, as the restrictions placed upon him by the Geasa could just be things he likes doing.

Scathach's Geas

Bran must set aside 1 experience point per game session and Story Award for the Melee skill. Once 5 is reached he must seek out an apprentice and hold at least one training session per week. In exchange, his great skill will be known quickly throughout the lands. (Legendary, potent)

Dinsenchas Geas

Bran must medidate upon and care for battlefield sites at least four days every month. As long as he does this, his swordarm will always swing steady. (Ability - Melee; potent)
